American Girl, 5th Avenue. Day 1, Part 3
We started walking down 5th Avenue the couple of blocks to the American Girl store.
If you know Kyla at all, you know that she LOVES the historical American Girl dolls. She's read every single one of the books several times through, each, and pretty much knows all of their facts & everything by heart. Her birthday last year was American Girl themed (Felicity from the colonial time, which they actually don't make anymore), and she thinks she'll do a different doll this year. She had been saving her 'pocket money' and several people gave her money for Christmas also, so she had enough money to get a new doll while we were there. She had agonized over the catalog trying to decide which one, and had it narrowed down to 4, but hadn't been able to make the final decision yet. I had read online that the store (along with most of the other things we went to see actually) could be a packed, crazy, madhouse, but, as you can see, she had the run of the place. It was perfect.
The store is 3 stories high, and has every single thing from the catalog, plus even more stuff, on display at least once throughout the store. Some of it is displayed a couple of different places or ways even. She had picking out a doll on the brain, so we just briefly browsed the other areas, until we got to the historical dolls.
Trying to decide...(she was trying to decide between Josefina, Rebecca, Kit, and Kaya).
In the end, she chose Kaya, the native American girl, as I thought she probably would.
They had a display of all of the 'dolls of the year' ever made, the ones that are just made for one year.
They have a doll hair salon even, all kinds of stuff! We went back again, and I have more photos :) I was proud of Kyla though, she chose the doll she wanted and was ready to check out and leave, she didn't ask for a bunch of other stuff, I did buy a brush & pack of clothes hangers for her, but she didn't even ask for those, I had already planned to get them there. She spotted the little chairs that hook onto the table like they use in the restaurant and wanted to think about them, but wanted to try them out first before spending her money on one, so she decided to wait before purchasing right then.
Samuel wanted some shorts from Uniqlo, we had shopped there in Japan when we were there several years ago, but apparently they're seasonal (cool weather) so they didn't carry them. They had just opened this massive 'worldwide flagship store' that was pretty cool; Bottom right, they had this big mirrored ceiling runway type walkway with mannequins in the middle that Kyla liked. See her looking up at herself?
More famous art.....lots of it around the Rockefeller Center.
Cool Anthropolgie display we took pictures of for Aunt Sara :)
Kyla was disappointed the Rockettes weren't performing after she got all excited seeing the Radio City Music Hall sign.
These cubby hole things each had different intricate lego models. Some were kits that they have for sale, and some were just super creative things the employees had made. Kyla was looking at one of a ship, and noticed a girl that appeared to be drowning in the water and pointed it out. The employee that created it happened to be standing nearby (they were super unbusy also) and started telling her he had made it & stuff, and then stepped back and showed me that there was a NY City Policeman standing on deck watching her drown. Uh, okay......I wasn't sure what to say to him about that, ha! The dragon was legos too....
Atlas in legos....
Rockefeller Center in legos.
Rockefeller Plaza in legos....notice the statue isn't on his base, he's on the ice rink skating also!
I told Kyla she could chose a small set, and she got the "Inventor's Lab" from the brand new girl's lego line. Which I keep reading all of this controversy about, and while I wish a couple of them were dressed a bit differently maybe, I think they're pretty fabulous. I loved legos growing up, but all the ones now are, whether it's stereotypical to say so or not, super, super boyish. There's no way she's going to pick up & play with all of that Ninja stuff, etc. So, there's my two cents, ha! We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art shop that was there too, where all the ladies downstairs just had a fit over Kyla & her little cape (that my Mom made for her for Christmas!) and wanted to hear all about her trip so far, told her to come back and see them soon, etc. She took a little break & sat down & read there a few minutes too :)
Headed back to the subway....are you tired yet? Remember this is the day we left Arkansas after getting up at 4:45!!
Kyla was so cute, when we got off of the subway she started looking for "our landmark", the George Washington Parkway Bridge that she had seen out of their apartment window so knew it must be close. She & Audrie immediately started dressing up & playing ballet and who knows what all else, having a great time. In fact, I told Rachel I couldn't believe it, Kyla hadn't been able to wait to get her doll out of the box, and we were there a good hour with her playing with the girls before she even mentioned anything about the doll! After that, we did (finally) go to sleep :) What an amazing first day in the city!
